Iowa to Allow ‘Social Districts’ for Drinking in Public Streets, Sidewalks

Statewide Iowa (RI) — A new Iowa law that takes effect Wednesday will let cities create temporary social districts where people may buy alcohol from a bar or restaurant and legally carry it outside to drink on public streets, sidewalks, and other designated areas.

Senator Jesse Green of Boone described the concept during Senate debate in late April.

City ordinances must outline the dates and operating hours for these social districts — sometimes called entertainment zones. Algona’s City Council has already set the wheels in motion to create a social district for its annual Founders’ Day celebration the second weekend in July.
