Firefighters Put Out Tree Fire, Burning Piles

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Company was called out for a fire on Thursday, April 16, 2026, near Sheldon.

According to Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt, at about 5:10 p.m., the Sheldon Fire Company was called to the report of a fire in a tree at 1981 East 9th Street in Sheldon.

The chief says they found the fire in the hollow cavity of an old maple tree. He says the person there had been burning sticks and twigs, and a hot ember from that got in the pocket of the old maple tree, where it started a fire.

Hindt says no injuries were reported, and nothing of value was burned. He says they did put out the other fires as well, as only recreational fires are allowed in Sheldon city limits.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for not quite an hour.

Earlier that day, at about 11:15, the George firefighters were called to put out a burning pile.

George Fire Chief Bill Sprock says the homeowner had taken down some trees and burned the pile on Tuesday, but with the strong winds on Thursday, the fire flared back up and they called 911 for help putting it out. Sprock says that with the help of the Little Rock firefighters, they put it out with water and foam and were on their way back to their stations by 12:30 p.m.
