Marcus and Granville, Iowa (KAYL) — Two northwest Iowa elevators are changing course — and producers will feel the change this fall.
AgState has announced it will shut down grain operations at two of its locations, calling the move a difficult but necessary step for the cooperative’s long‑term stability. In a press release, leaders confirmed they will close the grain portion of the Granville site and stop receiving corn at Marcus effective September 1st.
According to the release, the decision follows “extensive analysis” and is rooted in AgState’s responsibility to protect member equity and ensure the cooperative remains sustainable for future generations. Leaders say several factors drove the change — including shifting grain market dynamics, with more producers hauling directly to processors, dairies, and ethanol plants instead of local elevators. AgState also pointed to rising maintenance and operational costs and the need to maintain safe, efficient facilities.
Despite the grain shutdown, AgState says both Marcus and Granville will continue offering agronomy and energy services, and those operations will remain unchanged.
The announcement comes after a series of closed‑door meetings with producers, where AgState leaders outlined the transition and addressed questions. While details from those meetings were not released publicly, the cooperative says it remains committed to “open and honest communication” and encourages members to reach out to board representatives or leadership with concerns.
In its statement, AgState emphasized its core values — including respect, integrity, safety, and excellence — and said those principles will guide the transition as the cooperative works to support employees and customers. Leaders say the decision aligns with AgState’s long‑term strategy and ensures the cooperative remains a trusted partner for producers across northwest Iowa.
