Distracted Driving Law Went Into Effect July 1st

Northwest Iowa — Several new laws went into effect on July 1st of this year, and one of the most talked-about laws is the new law against distracted driving.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz tells us about that law.

Trooper Kurtz says that texting isn’t the only thing prohibited under the new distracted driving law.

He talks about how the law applies when a distracted driver causes a crash.

Kurtz explains the penalties that go along with those felony crimes.

He says that there are exemptions to the law, such as GPS navigation.

Kurtz says the new distracted driving law doesn’t address the hands-free use of cell phones.  He says it is still legal, if you’re 18 or older, to make calls with a handheld cell phone while driving in Iowa.
