Emergency Workers Get HAZMAT Training

Sheldon, Iowa — Emergency workers from throughout O’Brien County gathered in Sheldon Thursday evening to learn about equipment and procedures they hope they’ll never have to use.

The Sioux City Fire Department conducted the training using one of their two Hazardous Materials, or HAZMAT response vehicles.

O’Brien County Emergency Management Coordinator Jerad Johnson tells us that O’Brien County has a contract with the Sioux City Fire Department for handling of hazardous materials in the county.

Johnson explained that the training sessions are part of the County’s contract with the Sioux City Department.

He says the purpose of Thursday evening’s training was to familiarize the local departments with the equipment and procedures that Sioux City has to offer.

Johnson says that Sheldon’s Fire and EMS crews weren’t the only ones taking part in Thursday’s training.

Thursday night’s training was held outside the Sheldon Fire Station in downtown Sheldon.
