Moville, Iowa (RI) — The two candidates running to replace Iowa’s Fourth District Congressman Randy Feenstra took a moment at the Woodbury County Fair to show a bit of unity — posing together for a photo while holding an American flag.

Republican Chris McGowan was at the GOP booth in Moville, and Dave Dawson was nearby at the Democratic booth. McGowan says they saw each other and ended up talking.

McGowan posted the photo on Facebook, calling Dawson personable and professional. Dawson mentioned the encounter during his speech on the Des Moines Register Political Soapbox at the Iowa State Fair, saying it was the first time the two had crossed paths on the campaign trail.

McGowan says the two will settle on a date for a debate, but it will be scheduled after he learns more about his daughter’s upcoming military deployment. All five of McGowan’s adult children serve in the military.

McGowan is president of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce. Dawson is an assistant Woodbury County Attorney. Dawson says although both work in Sioux City, they haven’t interacted much.

As of August 1st, voter registration data shows the Fourth District includes about 94,000 Democrats, 122,000 independents, and 212,000 Republicans.
