Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — A top Trump Administration official says negotiations with Canada over revisions to the U.S.-Mexico-Candada Agreement (USMCA) have been challenging.

Luke Lindberg, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Under Secretary for Trade and Agricultural Affairs, says the issues are well-known but require political will to resolve.

President Trump had threatened to impose 50% tariffs on a variety of Canadian exports — including dairy products, cement, and hockey equipment — Wednesday. However, he announced late Tuesday night that negotiators had reached a breakthrough and talks would continue for three more days.

The USMCA was ratified by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in early 2020 during Trump’s first term. Lindberg says discussions with Mexico have been more productive during the current review period.

Lindberg made his comments during a stop at the Iowa State Fair, where several Trump Administration officials have appeared this week, including the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and the Secretary of War.
