Statewide Iowa (RI) — With 185 days left in her final term in the U.S. Senate, Joni Ernst says she’s focused on getting a Farm Bill to the president’s desk. Ernst, a Republican from Red Oak, serves on the Senate Ag Committee.

Congress has been unable to agree on a new Farm Bill for three years. The committee’s chairman unveiled a proposal that does not include some elements that were in the House-passed bill — like language overriding California’s law restricting the sale of certain pork products in that state.

Arkansas Senator John Boozman says he’s not confident the Farm Bill would pass the senate if that provision is included.

Ernst suggests another ag-related issue will be resolved outside of the Farm Bill debate. A proposal to allow E15 to be sold year-round is included President Trump’s recent request for additional military funding.

Ernst announced last September she would not seek a third term. Her 12-year tenure in the Senate ends January 2nd.
