Alton, Iowa (SCR) – The Iowa DOT held a special dedication ceremony in Alton Friday morning, officially naming the Lance Corporal B Jay Leusink Memorial bridge.

The newly designated bridge is located just North of the Highway 10 and Highway 75 intersection, commonly known as “Million-Dollar Corner.”

The ceremony began with an instrumental performance of the National Anthem followed by an opening prayer.

After these opening moments, the ceremony turned to remembering the life of Lance Corporal Leusink. Those in attendance looked back at his journey, noting that he was born in Orange City and lived in Maurice. He then left the area to go to Honolulu, Hawaii as a US Marine, and ultimately deployed to Iraq.

It was during that deployment to Iraq in 2006 that Lance Corporal Leusink tragically died in an explosion from an IED.

With Friday’s dedication, the Iowa DOT now permanently honors his service and sacrifice just north of the Million-Dollar Corner.
