Dry September Sees Highest Temperature Of Year

Sheldon, Iowa — While September did have the highest temperature of the year, Sheldon’s average temperature for September 2022 was just slightly higher than normal. The precipitation for the month was far below average.

According to the weather facts ascertained daily by KIWA Radio, September 21st reached 99 degrees in Sheldon, breaking a record high for that day, and with Sheldon not breaking into triple-digits throughout the summer 2022, that day was also the hottest day of the year. That day was actually 29 degrees above the normal high of 70. Even with that warm day, the average high temperature for Sheldon matched that of September 2021, at 78 degrees, and with the normal average high of 74, September was a little warmer than normal.

The lowest temperature Sheldon saw in September 2022 was 25 degrees, which was reached on September 29th, just over a week later than the 99 degree high for the year. Although this low did get relatively close to the record low for the day, it did not quite break the record low for September 29th, which remained 18 degrees from 1899. The average low temperature for the month was 47 degrees, which is just slightly below the average normal low for September, which is 49, and a few degrees cooler than last September’s average low of 50.

Precipitation in September 2022 was extraordinarily low, only delivering 4 days with any rain, and the cumulative total not reaching even a half of an inch, coming in at 41 hundredths of an inch. The normal precipitation for September is 3.05 inches, so the 2.64 inches of deficit worsened the overall drought that Sheldon has been experiencing recently. The dry September brought the year’s total precipitation to 14.82 inches, which is 8.84 inches below the normal year to date of 23.68 inches.
