Semi Tractor, Flatbed Trailer, Farm Tractor, Bale Buster All Destroyed In Fire

Ocheyedan, Iowa — A semi-truck, a flatbed trailer, a farm tractor, and a bale buster were destroyed in a fire on Thursday, June 11, 2020, near Ocheyedan.

According to Ocheyedan Fire Chief Dan Hartwig, about 2:00 p.m., the Ocheyedan Fire Department was called to the report of a semi fire on Highway 9 between Starling and Taft Avenues, about two miles west of the Ocheyedan corner on Highway 9.

The chief says the fire department saw the entire rig on fire as they approached the scene. He says they used water and foam to fight the fire. He says the semi-tractor, the flatbed trailer, the farm tractor, and the bale buster — which is an implement that shreds or grinds large round bales — were all on fire.

Hartwig says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined, but it is thought to have been electrical in nature. He says it started in the cab.

Chief Hartwig reports that everything was totaled. He estimated the damage at over $40,000.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for two hours and 45 minutes.
