Alton Teen Injured In Freak Accident In School Parking Lot

Orange City, Iowa — An Alton teen was transported to the hospital during the noon hour Thursday from injuries received in a freak motor vehicle accident in Orange City.

According to a report from the Orange City Police Department, the mishap occurred when a 2008 Ford F150 pickup, driven by 17-year-old Lane Hettinga of Orange City, was pulling three passengers on a homemade sled in the north parking lot at MOC-Floyd Valley school and made a left turn, travelling west in the parking lot. Police say the turn caused the sled to slide to the right of the vehicle, striking a parked 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, owned by Adam Bonnema of Orange City.

Authorities say the collision injured one of the sled’s passengers, 16-year-old Carter Solsma, of Alton, who was transported to the Orange City Health System Hospital by the Orange City Ambulance.

Damage to the parked truck was estimated by police at about $1,000.
