Fire In Hawarden Alley Destroys Two Mowers, Canoe, Damages Shed

Hawarden, Iowa — A shed was damaged, and some equipment was destroyed in a fire on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Payne Allen, at about 2:20 p.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a shed on fire in an alley near 801 11th Street in Hawarden.

The chief says the property owner had lit a fire ring and walked away. Meanwhile, the flames worked their way through the grass and started the shed on fire. He says a small lean-to on the building burned, the south wall started on fire, but firefighters were able to put it out before it got into the shed. He tells us a riding mower, a push mower, and a canoe between the fire ring and the shed were lost in the blaze.

Allen says no injuries were reported.

He tells us that Ireton firefighters normally respond to structure fire calls in Hawarden, but once the Hawarden firefighters knew what they were dealing with, they radioed to Ireton to tell them they didn’t have to respond this time.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 30 minutes.
