Lyon County Low-Speed Pursuit Becomes Standoff

Lyon County, Iowa — A Sibley man led Lyon County law enforcement officers on a chase that ended in a standoff late Tuesday afternoon.

According to a report from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, approximately 4:10 Tuesday afternoon a Lyon County Deputy stopped a motor vehicle for traveling 80 mph in a 55 mph zone.  Authorities say the vehicle came to a stop and the driver was identified as 72-year-old Kenneth David Fransen, of Sibley.  After the Deputy identified Mr. Fransen and learned that he was barred from driving Mr. Fransen drove off, and led deputies on a low speed fourteen-mile pursuit before being stopped with the assistance of a tire deflation device on A-34 near Highway 75, according to the Sheriff’s Office report.

After the pursuit came to an end, a standoff occurred between Fransen and law enforcement that lasted for approximately 55 minutes.

Deputies say after the standoff Fransen was brought in for a mental evaluation.

According to authorities, charges are pending for driving while barred, interference with official acts, failure to have SR22 insurance, speeding, failure to yield to emergency vehicles, and failure to have an interlock ignition device.
