Missouri Man Convicted Of Burglary, Motor Vehicle Theft In Sioux County

Orange City, Iowa — A Missouri man has been convicted of burglary in Sioux County District Court.

According to Sioux County Attorney Thomas Kunstle, 26-year-old Daniel James Chiodini of St. Louis, Missouri, has been convicted after a jury trial for the crimes of Burglary in the Third Degree and Theft of a Motor Vehicle, both Class D Felonies. He says the Sioux County Attorney’s Office prosecuted this matter cooperating with Orange City and Hawarden Police and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

Court records indicate that on December 7, 2019, police checked on a parked car at the Floyd River B Complex in rural Alton. Chiodini immediately fled from police and wrecked his vehicle, but continued fleeing on foot. Police searched for Chiodini but soon lost track of him. It was discovered that Chiodini ran about a mile, crossing the Floyd River, to a nearby farm, where he entered a shed and took a pickup truck. Chiodini then drove to the Hawarden hospital, giving a fake name and seeking medical attention for his feet, which had sustained significant injuries since he was not wearing any shoes while he fled. Police were called who quickly identified Chiodini as the same individual who fled from police earlier in the night.

On Wednesday, a Sioux County jury returned a verdict of guilty on both counts, Burglary in the Third Degree and Theft of a Motor Vehicle.

According to the county attorney’s office, the matter will be scheduled for a future sentencing hearing.
