(KIWA Staff Photo)Rock Valley, Iowa– A Sioux Falls, SD man was flown to a Sioux Falls hospital after a crash near Rock Valley on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
The Iowa State Patrol reports that at about 9:30 a.m., 58-year-old Dustin Schouten of Sioux Falls, SD was driving a 2023 Dodge truck southbound on L30, or Elmwood Avenue, a mile and a half north of Rock Valley. They tell us that 46-year-old Jesse Van Diepen of Boyden was northbound on L30 in a 2024 Peterbilt semi.
The report says that Schouten crossed the centerline at the crest of a hill, striking the semi nearly head-on.
The Avera CareFlight helicopter landed at the scene and took Schouten to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. His injuries were called “serious” in the report.
Van Diepen was not injured.
The trooper says that in addition to the Avera CareFlight staff and other Iowa State Patrol Post 6 troopers, the Rock Valley firefighters and Rock Valley Ambulance Squad assisted at the scene.
