Part Of Standing Corn Field Near Paullina Destroyed In Flames

Paullina, Iowa — Part of a standing corn field was destroyed in a fire on Saturday, September 24th near Paullina.

According to Paullina Fire Chief Ryan Harper, the Paullina Fire Department was paged out at approximately 4:20 pm for a cornstalk field fire, at the property adjacent to 5853 460th Street, two and a half miles east of Paullina.

When they arrived, Harper says firefighters found active fire not only in harvested corn stalks but also in standing corn. He says the owner of the property “thankfully had a tractor and disk already onsite and was actively disking to try to create a barrier from the fire spreading any further.”

Harper says firefighters started extinguishing hot spots and then attempted to save the standing corn that was on fire, but ultimately the owner had to disk it also to get the fire to extinguish completely.

He tells us the Granville Fire Department was also paged to assist and firefighters were on the scene for about a half an hour.
