Doon, Iowa — A Rock Valley man, Jacob Daniel Soodsma, has died as the result of an ATV accident in Doon on Saturday.
According to Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Vince Kurtz, the preliminary investigation indicates that about 3:30 p.m., a four-wheel ATV was being operated by 27-year-old Joseph Thomas Keegan of Rock Rapids at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Main Street in Doon. A passenger identified as 25-year-old Jacob Daniel Soodsma of Rock Valley was riding on the back of the ATV.
Sergeant Kurtz says the ATV was entering the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Main Street from a private residence when Mr. Soodsma fell off the back of the ATV.
The report says Soodsma sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley by the Lyon County Ambulance. Soodsma was later airlifted to Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls where he passed away.
Kurtz says the incident remains under investigation by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol. A technical collision investigation is being completed by the Iowa State Patrol.
The Lyon County Ambulance Squad, Doon Fire Department and the Doon Rescue Squad assisted at the scene.
