Rock Valley Mobile Home Totaled Or Nearly Totaled In Fire

Rock Valley, Iowa — A double-wide mobile home was damaged in a fire on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, in Rock Valley.

According to Rock Valley Fire Chief Brent Eshuis, about 9:20 p.m., the Rock Valley Fire Department was called to the report of a trailer house fire at 605 Tenth Street, Lot 28, in Rock Valley.

The chief says the fire department saw flames coming from the eaves on the east end of the trailer as they approached the scene. He says they used an exterior attack initially, then made entry into the home, where thy found the fire to be all above the ceiling.

Eshuis says no injuries were reported.

He says the fire is believed to have started with an occupant turning on a burner to cook something. But as it turned out, they had turned the wrong burner on. The burner they turned on had a pot of grease on it. They left the room for a time and returned to a grease fire. The exhaust hood had been on, and since it exhausts into the attic, it had sucked the fire into the attic. The occupant attempted to put out the fire themselves, but eventually exited the mobile home and called 911.

Hull firefighters provided automatic aid.

Chief Eshuis reports that the home was totaled or very nearly totaled and sustained major damage.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene an hour and a half to two hours. While they were on the scene, they also received a fire alarm call at Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley. A group of Hull firefighters left the mobile home fire and investigated the alarm call, which turned out to be a false alarm.

Eshuis tells us that Love, INC is assisting the occupants of the mobile home with temporary housing.
