Sheldon Officer Receives Minor Injuries In Friday Morning Altercation

Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon police officer received minor injuries during an arrest Friday morning.

Sheldon Police Chief Scott Burtch tells KIWA that Officer Eric Meineke was dispatched to Campus Cleaners, the former Bubbles, during the 8:00 o’clock hour Friday morning in response to a 911 call from the business about an intoxicated male who was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the business.

Burtch says Officer Meineke confronted the individual outside the business, where the suspect became more belligerent. After calling for backup, Meineke was forced to deploy his taser, which had no effect on the man. He then deployed pepper spray, which Burtch says had some effect, but Meineke was forced to get into a physical struggle with the man when trying to place him under arrest.

According to Chief Burtch, Meinke was the lone Sheldon officer on duty when the incident took place, with the nearest on-duty officer being an O’Brien County Sheriff’s Deputy, who responded from Primghar. That deputy then instructed dispatch to call Chief Burtch to respond from home. Burtch and Meineke then got the suspect under control and under arrest.

Burtch says Dustyn Bergstrom, of Sheldon, was arrested on charges of: Assaulting a Law Enforcement Officer, with Injury; Public Intoxication; Interference with Official Acts, with Injury; and Disorderly Conduct.

Burtch says Meineke suffered some minor injuries in the incident, and Bergstrom was transported to the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar.
