Sibley Fire Chief Sustains Serious Burns In Controlled Burn Mishap

Sibley, Iowa — A Sibley firefighter has sustained serious burns in a mishap that occurred Monday night, August 31st.

According to Sibley Fire Chief Ken Huls, it was the chief himself who was burned.

Huls, who gave us the details from his hospital bed, says it all started at a training burn about 6:45 p.m. on Egret Lane in southern Sibley. The chief says he was trying to ignite a large pile of pallets on fire, when a flash of flame came forward so quickly and immediately, that he says it was too late for him to get out of the way. The chief sustained burns to his upper facial area and both forearms.

Huls tells us that unfortunately, he hadn’t put his bunker gear on yet.

He was rushed to the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, where doctors decided to send him on a fixed-wing flight to Regions Burn Hospital in St Paul, where at last report, he remained.
