Okoboji, Iowa (KUOO) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is recommending no swimming at two popular beaches in the Iowa Great Lakes after recent water-quality tests showed high levels of bacteria, specifically E-coli.

The affected areas include Crandall’s Beach on the north side of Big Spirit Lake and Emerson Bay on the west side of West Lake Okoboji.

According to the DNR, E-coli bacteria can cause illness and infections if ingested.
