Milford, Iowa (RI) — The city council in Milford — a community of about 3,300 residents — has approved the final plat and an urban-renewal plan for a housing development expected to add more than 120 lots when completed.
Developer Doug Holzrichter says the project is now ready to move into the construction phase.
The Harvest Hills development is located near the new Okoboji Elementary School in Milford. Plans include a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, duplexes, and other multi-family units.
Holzrichter says his family has owned the land since the mid-1960s, and the groundwork for the project began years ago when the city extended water and sewer service to the area.
The average Iowa home was built in 1955, making the state’s housing supply the eighth oldest nationally. A recent report from the Common Sense Institute found demand for housing is outpacing supply, and by the end of this year, Iowa is projected to be short 16,000 homes.
However, the report also shows that if the current pace of new construction continues, Iowa’s housing shortage could be eliminated by the end of 2028.
