Rock Rapids, Iowa — A 19-year-old Rock Rapids woman has been arrested on a felony child endangerment charge.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19-year-old Morgan De Weerd of Rock Rapids this past Wednesday, according to court documents.
In her statement, the deputy doesn’t go into specifics, but says that in late January, an eight-to-nine-month-old child was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The deputy says this was due to what she calls “DeWeerd’s neglectful actions.” She says the victim’s injuries caused scarring, which is believed to be permanent.
DeWeerd was charged with child endangerment – serious injury, a class C felony. If convicted, De Weerd could face up to ten years in prison. The deputy also says that while she was being arrested, DeWeerd was also found in possession of a THC vape. She faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance – marijuana.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for May 1st.
At last report, DeWeerd remained in the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
