Statewide Iowa (RI) — State Auditor Rob Sand, a Democrat running for governor, says it’s time for Iowa to crack down on pharmacy benefit managers, or PBMs, which he argues restrict where patients can fill their prescriptions.
PBMs work with insurance companies to set prescription drug prices.
Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill last year establishing new state regulations for PBMs, but major sections of the law are being challenged in court and have not gone into effect.
Brian Wall, vice president of the Iowa Pharmacy Association, says more Iowa pharmacies have closed in the past year and that while there’s been some movement at the federal level, more state action is needed.
