Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in regular session on Wednesday.

They approved the consent agenda for the meeting.

The next topic they discussed was the city manager vacancy. There are some differing opinions about what to do about the situation. The council tried to determine if they wanted to hire a consulting firm to help them in the process. Councilman Tom Eggers said that the council should give people from the community a chance. He also said that he felt the job description of city manager needed to be updated. Councilman Brad Hindt said that he thought a workshop meeting was necessary. Councilman Jeff Wager said he would be in favor of hiring a firm, as he’d like to know what other cities are doing. Mayor Greg Geels said it was his feeling that the job description should be finished first before hiring a firm. There was much more discussion, which is available by watching the meeting video, posted below. In the end, they decided to meet next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. with Theia Consulting, if they are available at that time.

The council also approved the EMS/Fire/Police loan agreement.

Then they talked about TIF expenditures. After much discussion, they decided to move forward with a $5.1 million bond, which may increase before September if they find they need to. They also added the basketball/pickleball court resurfacing, the Crossroads Pavilion storage building, assistance with the high school parking lot, and the paving of the Highway 18 frontage roads using the $1.4 million that was left.
