Ashton, Iowa — Firefighters from three towns were kept busy for a couple of hours and five acres of standing corn was burned in a fire on Sunday, October 1, 2023, near Ashton.
According to Ashton Fire Chief Andy Gacke, at about 3:15 p.m., the Ashton Fire Department was called to the report of a field fire near 250th Street & Olive Avenue, a mile and a half south of Ashton and a mile east.
The chief says the fire department saw burning corn as they approached the scene.
Gacke says no injuries were reported. He tells us they were assisted by the Sibley and Sheldon fire departments.
He says the cause of the fire was a burn pile going out of control.
Chief Gacke reports that about five or six acres of standing corn burned in the blaze. Assuming the county average bushel per acre and the current cash price, the corn was probably worth about $6,000.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours.
