Rock Valley, Iowa — A Hawarden man has been arrested on a warrant charging him with Felony OWI (Operating While Impaired), as the result of a November traffic crash.
According to court records in the case, about 9:40 on Sunday evening, November 7th, Sioux County Deputies were called to a single-vehicle crash on 360th Street near Cleveland Avenue, southwest of Rock Valley. According to deputies, 30-year-old Nicholas Van Schepen was driving a Ford Pickup on 360th Street, when he lost control and rolled the vehicle. Van Schepen was reportedly injured in the crash.
Court records indicate that the deputy allegedly noticed that Van Schepen displayed signs of impairment. Deputies reportedly also found an open beer can near the scene of the crash. According to court records, blood was drawn from Van Schepen to be tested to determine his blood alcohol content.
According to online court records, a charge of felony OWI was filed by the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office on November 21st, with an arrest warrant on the charge issued November 23rd. Van Schepen was taken into custody on the warrant on Monday, December 6th.
The charge against Van Schepen is a felony charge because, according to court records, he had been convicted of, or received a deferred judgment for, OWI on two previous occasions; once in February of 2015, and again in November of 2016. 3rd Offense OWI is a Class D Felony.
