Orange City, Iowa — An Orange City pedestrian was taken to the hospital after being struck by a car in Orange City on Thursday, September 26, 2019.
The Orange City Police Department reports that about 8:10 p.m., 34-year-old Kyle Brooks of Merrill was driving a 2005 Nissan southbound on Central Avenue North in Orange City. The report says that Brooks turned east onto Second Street Northeast and did not see pedestrian Katherine DeJong of Orange City in the crosswalk, and collided with the pedestrian. The officer says Brooks said he had briefly looked down at his phone to see if he had any messages and that he did not see DeJong.
The Orange City Ambulance took DeJong to Orange City Area Health System Hospital. Her injuries were described as “minor.”
Brooks’ Nissan sustained no damage.
Brooks was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and illegal use of a mobile device.
