Two Dead In Spirit Lake Area Crash

Spirit Lake, Iowa — A Jackson, Minnesota woman and her son are dead as the result of a crash near Spirit Lake on Saturday.

According to the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, the accident was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m.. They say 29-year-old Mariah Nelson of Jackson was driving a 2008 Hyundai eastbound on 120th Street. It appears that Nelson went through the stop sign and collided with a 2011 GMC Sierra driven by 63-year-old Allen Weinzetl, also of Jackson, who had been southbound on US Highway 71. Both vehicles rolled and came to rest southeast of the intersection.

Nelson and her one-year-old son Symere Williams were killed in the accident. Nelson’s daughters, five-year-old Armani Scott and six-year-old Zariah Scott were transported to Lakes Regional Hospital in Spirit Lake with incapacitating injuries and later transferred to Sanford Hospital and University Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Weinzetl was transported to Lakes Regional with non-incapacitating injuries. A passenger in his vehicle, 58-year-old Teresa Chonko was also transported to Lakes Regional with incapacitating injuries and later transferred to Avera McKennen Hospital in Sioux Falls.

The sheriff’s office says the accident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol.
