Lake Park, Iowa (KUOO) — A long-vacant building in Lake Park that once housed a nursing home is set for new life.

The former Aspire Nursing Home has been empty for several years. On Monday night, the Lake Park City Council approved a request to rezone the property from a single-family residential to multi-family residential.

Adam Howerzyl of Axis, an Orange City real estate management firm, says the company plans to renovate the building.

Howerzyl says Axis has a good track record with similar projects in the region.

The council also approved a 10-year, 100% tax abatement for the project.

Provided that process goes favorably, Howerzyl says construction could get underway soon after.

Howerzyl says the company may consider other projects in Lake Park.

Council member Whitney Thiessen says the redevelopment will help address a shortage of affordable housing and could help fill seats at Harris-Lake Park schools.
