Alton, Iowa — The Alton Fire Department was called out on Wednesday, March 11, 2020.
According to Alton Fire Chief Quintin Van Es, about 3:20 p.m., the Alton Fire Department was paged to the report of a ditch fire along Highway 60 at the Plymouth County line, just south of Carnes.
The chief says when they got there the fire department saw a ditch fire in the southbound ditch on the west side. He says they used water to fight the fire, which was only the width of the ditch for about 100 feet.
Van Es says no injuries were reported.
He says fire officials suspect that the cause may have been sparks from a passing malfunctioning truck, as the Le Mars Fire Department also had a grass fire several miles south on the same side of the road by the Seney area.
Chief Van Es says the four firefighters who responded were on the scene for only about ten minutes.
