Minivan Destroyed By Fire Near Orange City

Orange City, Iowa– A minivan was destroyed in a fire on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, near Orange City.

According to Orange City Fire Chief Denny Vander Wel, about 7:00 p.m., the Orange City Fire Department was called to the report of a minivan fire at the intersection of 460th Street and Ironwood Avenue, three-quarters of a mile southwest of the Orange City Airport.

The chief says the fire department saw the minivan fully engulfed as they approached the scene. He says that while it was a major fire, they were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

Vander Wel says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined, but the owner of the vehicle did mention that the vehicle was overheating earlier. He says they know that the fire started under the hood, but it was hard to determine any more than that as even the radiator was melted by the intense heat.

Chief Vander Wel reports that the Mazda minivan was less than ten years old and was totaled in the blaze.

He says they used about 200 gallons of water to fight the fire, and the 13 firefighters who responded were on scene for about an hour.
