Sanborn, Iowa– A mobile home was destroyed in a fire on Saturday, February 9, 2019, in Sanborn.
According to Sanborn Assistant Fire Chief Scott Vogelaar, about 9:50 a.m., the Sanborn Fire Department was called to the report of a trailer fire at 312 East Seventh Street.
The chief says the fire department saw fairly thick smoke coming from the middle of the trailer as they approached the scene. He says they attacked the fire from the outside. He says they attempted to mount an interior attack, but the floor was pretty soft, so they continued with efforts outside.
Assistant Chief Vogelaar says a cat was unaccounted for after the fire, but there were no injuries reported.
The fire department was assisted by the Sheldon Fire Company, the Sanborn Police Department, the Sanborn Ambulance Team, and O’Brien County Emergency Management.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a portable heater that had been placed under the mobile home to thaw frozen pipes.
Assistant Chief Vogelaar reports that the older mobile home was totaled in the blaze.
He says the over 20 firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three hours.
Vogelaar says O’Brien County Emergency Management Director Jared Johnson is helping the homeowner access Red Cross and county assistance.
