Sanborn Firefighters Respond To Propane Leak Call

Sanborn, Iowa — “It could have been much worse,” — that from Sanborn Fire Chief Randy Lyman about a propane leak call north of Sanborn to which the Sanborn Fire Department was called on Monday, September 23rd.

According to Lyman, the call was to 2760 Redwood Avenue, which is four and a half miles north of the west side of Sanborn. He says they were paged about 12:40 p.m.

Lyman says they arrived to find a regulator fitting on the top of a 1000-gallon propane tank had been leaking. He says with the wind out of the south, one of the people living on the farm place smelled the propane, so went out to the tank and turned the valve closed, but kept smelling the propane, so 911 was called.

Lyman tells us that the gas had been shut off, but there was still gas in the line that was escaping, and he thinks that’s where the smell was coming from. He says firefighters stood by as a precaution until propane technicians from Sanborn Propane were able to fix the issue.

He says they were on the scene for about 45 minutes.
